Flexible Low-cost Housing

Program: Private housing

Location: Brno, Czech Republic

Year: 2012

This project was designed with the intent to create comfortable, flexible, affordable socialized housing taking into consideration realistic family needs. Architecturally, it is low-rise “row housing” and was to be built in the Brno district of Malomerice. As a part of the concept, there are two main rows of 16 houses with a park in the middle for community common space. Rather than creating one solid block, each house is designed to be separate with a small thoroughfare to the central community area.

The housing development is variable, the basic unit being a single house with a living room and kitchen on the ground floor and bedrooms on both the first and second floors.

Each one of these houses can be adapted to the needs of the tenants, growing gradually as the family gets bigger. It is designed to be easily extended, even while being used.

The construction is designed to be eco-friendly consisting of universal wooden modules 3 x 6 x 3 meters. These units can be prefabricated and easily put together on-site with negligible time and costs. The façade design uses wooden cladding in shades of brown and beige.
